Splitting shared finances after a breakup

Untangling money after a breakup is hard enough emotionally. A calm, practical guide to the shared lease, deposit, joint accounts, subscriptions and shared purchases — and settling up cleanly.

List everything shared, settle it once, and close the loops — so the money is done even if the feelings aren't.

Start with a list, not a fight

A breakup is emotional; the money side doesn’t have to be. Make one list of everything you share — the lease, the deposit, joint accounts, cards, subscriptions, things you bought together, bills that are still coming — and work through it item by item, ideally in writing.

The home

  • --Who stays and who goes? If both are on the lease, agree who takes it over and inform the landlord.
  • --Rent until the end of the notice period is usually shared as before.
  • --The deposit — split by what each person paid, after any agreed deductions (moving out and settling up).
  • --Final utility bills — split up to the move-out date.

Accounts, subscriptions and purchases

  • --Joint accounts — agree how to split the balance, then close them or remove one name.
  • --Shared subscriptions — move them to one person’s card or cancel (splitting shared subscriptions).
  • --Shared purchases — the person who keeps an item can buy out the other’s share, or sell it and split.
  • --Money owed — settle outstanding balances once, with a clear final number.
  • --Change passwords and remove saved cards from shared devices and apps.

Settle once, then close the ledger

The kindest outcome is one final settlement both of you agree with, and then nothing hanging over either of you. A record of who paid what during the relationship makes that far easier — and far less personal. If you’re moving in with someone new later, the live-in money guide is worth a read.
