The full cost of a school year
- --Tuition fees — monthly, quarterly or termly.
- --Annual and admission charges — development, admission or annual fees, often due at the start of the year.
- --Transport — school bus or van, usually a monthly or term fee.
- --Books, notebooks and stationery.
- --Uniforms and shoes — and replacements mid-year as children grow.
- --Activities and trips — sports, music, competitions, excursions.
- --Tuition classes and coaching, if any.
- --Devices — a tablet or laptop for older students.
Turn lumps into a monthly number
Add up last year’s total school costs per child, divide by twelve, and save that amount every month in a separate pot — a sinking fund. When the term fee or the April book list arrives, the money is already there. Add a little for the annual fee increase most schools apply.
Keep the receipts
Under the old tax regime, tuition fees for up to two children can be claimed within Section 80C — only the tuition component, not transport or development fees. Keep the fee receipts with each expense (which receipts to keep for tax). Not tax advice — check with a CA.
Sharing school costs
Parents who split costs — separated parents, or grandparents who help — avoid friction by logging every school expense in one shared place, with who paid. It’s the same system as any family budget.
