When you ask about a charge in WhatsApp, the answer lives in WhatsApp — scrolled away within the hour. The next person who wonders about the same charge has to ask again. Context that lives beside the expense is context everyone can find, forever.

• --A one-line note (“this was the airport taxi, split 3 ways”) kills the question before it's asked.
• --Anyone can add the reason later — the payer isn't the only source of truth.
• --The thread stays attached to the entry, so it's there at settle-up time months later.

Good comment habits for shared money

A little discipline goes a long way. The best-run shared ledgers treat comments as the “why” layer on top of the “what”:

• --Drop a note on anything above your group's “I'd question that” threshold.
• --Use comments to flag a correction (“this should be split 2 ways, not 3”) instead of silently editing.
• --Confirm receipt of an odd charge with a quick reply so the payer knows it's settled in everyone's mind.
